Camille Paglia on Sarah Palin

On August 30, 2008, feminist social critic Camille Paglia said of Sarah Palin: “[She] is as tough as nails”.

“We may be seeing the first woman president. As a Democrat, I am reeling… That was the best political speech I have ever seen delivered by an American woman politician. Palin is as tough as nails… Good Lord, we had barely 12 hours of Democrat optimism… It was a stunningly timed piece of PR by the Republicans.”

Do you think Paglia is endorsing Palin (as some have suggested)? Or is she commenting on the “stunningly timed piece of PR by the Republicans”?

Here is Palin’s accepting the nom as VP running mate to John McCain.

  1. We are ready for change and Governor Palin is going to shake up Washington on both sides of the isle!

  2. she may shake it up but she will not be veep – she is tied to the oil companies and the corporate entities – we do not need her or him…

yes we need change – but we really need positive change…!

  3. No, I suspect Camille isn’t supporting her. It’s just that Ms. Paglia is a Democrat capable of critical thinking. She’s able to admire and respect people across the political aisle without bringing devisive politics into the frey. I always admire her essays and I’m looking forward to the next one at, I believe,

  4. omg..i thought palin’s speech sucked…big time. i was not impressed by her at all!

Sorry I was yelling – but CHRIST! ENOUGH!!!

  6. Gov. Palin of Alaska rocks!!!

  7. I was not impressed by Palin’s speech at all, and the more research I do on her…the more un-impressed I become…..YUCK!

  8. yeah palin rocks – with real rocks…!

  9. I think she was commenting on the PR move by the republicans.

  10. I can’t even watch. My vote is already set, and it’s anti everything that’s happened in the last decade.

You know I’m moving in with Pam if McCain is elected, right? We’re getting fake-married and raising kids and cain together.

  11. p.s. I like the new design, but think you should change the gray background to blue or red. That’s my unsolicited opinion for the day!

  12. p.s.s. Camile Paglia is nothing more than an intellectual shock-jock who has traded sense for notoriety.

  13. I think it was a comment on the PR move by the Republicans, NOT an endorsement. I agree wholly with Jane’s assesment!

Frankly, Jake, while I am glad to see women being tagged more and more, I feel she is allowing herself to be used as a tool in the vicious machine that is the RNC. She is certainly not a genuine move towards change.

As a thinking, voting, freedom loving American WOMAN, this shit SCARES the living hell outta me!

    Who is Sarah Palin (from

    1. She was elected Alaska’s governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.1

    2. Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.2

    3. She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000. 3

    4. Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.4

    5. She’s doesn’t think humans are the cause of climate change.5

    6. She’s solidly in line with John McCain’s “Big Oil first” energy policy. She’s pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won’t be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.6

How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.7

  14. Now I want McCain to win so I can fake marry Jane and raise a family 🙂

  15. Well, I can’t speak for Camille Paglia, but I have been known to say positive thoughts about someone or something I don’t agree with. For example, being at one of the kids sporting events and the opposing team makes a good block or shot…I’ll say outloud, great job! It’s just part of being fair and open minded.

With that being said, I’m not particularly impressed by Palin. I think McCain has a hidden agenda, well…maybe not so hidden….and I think she is the pawn that could and would be used at any moment.

  16. Sarah Palin is a magnificent candidate. She is exactly what we need in Washington, someone who still remembers what small-town values are and hasn’t had her common sense “educated” out of her head by the indoctrination of liberal universities that are staffed by faculty indistinguishable from communists.

She has more foreign policy and executive experience than Obama, who is the least qualified candidate in history to run on a major party ticket.

Abortion is America’s great modern holocaust. You can’t be a feminist and support the slaughter of 50 million unborn human beings, half women, since Roe vs. Wade. A president can do very little to stop this except appoint Supreme Court justices who will overturn it. Any Republican running this year would. If you’re a communist or an anti-life person, then you could never vote for a Republican anyway, and you’re a lost cause and a lost soul.

She did not support Buchanan, she supported Forbes. But not surprising you get propaganda instead of facts from the likes of, following in the tradition of Michael Moore.

Forget about creationism in public schools, school vouchers need to be made the law so that parents can send their children to the school of their choice. You’re pro-choice, right, liberals? The monopoly of the failed public school system needs to end if America is going to have any competitive future in the educational arena. Not to mention stop our children from liberal and/or communist indoctrination.

Humans DO NOT cause climate change. Anyone who believes that they do is probably someone who’s rejected all religion, or so they thought, until they substituted enviro-reilgiion for a real religion, bringing along many BELIEFS which cannot be proven, yet that you hold as dogma. Those of us with real religious beliefs don’t need to worship the mythical Mother Earth or believe in your global warming “end times” prophecies.

Not drilling for oil is the most clear expression to date of how liberals have NO COMMON SENSE. It’s a message the American public doesn’t get enough of. They simply can’t understand why liberal poltiicians won’t drill, because they have little concept of just how the left has taken over most political ideology among the elites of this country. You enviro-religious elites actually believe it WON’T take years to develop alternatives? You’re clueless and scientifically ignorant. Sarah Palin is a remarkable woman who can restore COMMON SENSE to the government, bringing us as much drilling as we can do in addition to every other possible development of alternative energy to help in the long-term.

ED. NOTE: What do you think of this, people? I’m thinking a little PR work is going on here- Jake

  17. I didn’t think Palin’s speech was much to talk about. Especially since everything I stand for, she’s against. Like gay rights. A woman’s right to choose, etc. And the comment about her being tough as nails? My racist and white, liquor drinking, gun toting aunt (grandfather’s sister) was tough as nails but that wouldn’t make her a good VP. We need something better than tough as nails. 🙂

  18. I think that Camille Paglia is speaking from her loins, not her head. The speech was not much to dissect and didn’t reveal much. From that speech I didn’t gather that she was as tough as nails in the same vein as Hillary, but then Hill did take Bill’s cahones and had them bronzed for her own wearing.

I’m not sure if Camille will support her or not; she’s a wild cannon. But I am pretty sure if Palin would be on the DL, Camille would try to get a hook up.

  19. While I don’t agree with everything Camille Paglia says, I often think she has an interesting take on sexual politics and power dynamics in relationships.

Nevertheless, I think she’s gone off the crazy deep end if she thinks anything about Sarah Palin is great.

If Sarah Palin would truly become the first female president it would simultaneously be a step forward for women, and the biggest step backward we’ve ever experienced, considering her insanely hard-line anti-choice views.

This leads me to wonder if Camille Paglia’s sexual politics also include “All women should be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen.” If it does, then Paglia has become far less shiny for me.

  20. It’s surprising to me that she’s taken seriously as a VP candidate. The RNC has come against almost everything feminist idea for the past 30 years…especially when it comes to working mothers. It appears this stance is selective… Now, the “gender” card is taken out when it suit’s them. Interesting!

What’s up with the ‘everyone is picking on Palin?” Does the term ‘martyr role’ come to mind to anyone else? After listening to the news it was suggested that the media and the DNC need to “tread lightly” lest they come across as harsh to a woman candidate. Good grief! I don’t remember anyone ‘treading lightly’ when it was Geraldine Ferraro or Hillary Clinton…not in the least!

I did a post titled…An Intereting “Vetting” Comparison. This is true…and compares the vetting process my hubby endured while securing a position within the US Dept of Energy. Even the “vetting” process is selective if it panders to a certain group.

Mc Cain said himself, she had been vetted for “hours”…HOURS! Are you serious? Al Gore was vetted for a full ten months…and he was a “seasoned” politician. What’s wrong with this picture?!

  21. Two prominent democrat women are definitely leading the American people on to believe they very well may vote for Palin and if these women were strongly in Obama’s camp, they would come right out and say they support Obama, however both Susan Estrich and Geraldine Ferraro are not endorsing Obama, but in fact are seriously speaking out against the smears and the sexist comments and the attacks levied by Obama’s press corps, the mainstream media.

For those who are saying, “the more I research her the more un-impressed I become…” try doing your research outside of bias, liberal blogs who have no factual evidence. In fact many of them won’t even answer to the facts presented to them, they are so sold out to their liberal ideals, they are willing to spread grossly misleading lies and rumors, despite them being disproved. They want to mention “troopergate” but they don’t want to post about the reports that the officer was already under review and investigation for tasering his 11 year old step son, he was drinking while on duty and behind the wheel of a cop car, that he threatened to shoot his father-in-laws daughter, etc. As well, other things that have not been reported because they are in his personal confidential file. They want to report on a false claim that she was a registered member of the AIG separatist group, which was disproven by the board of elections and by the head of the group who came out and said she was mistaken. Try doing a little more research and looking beyond blogs who share their opinion and not facts.

  22. […] all those who have responded to my last post and the post before that, suggesting that Sarah Palin is being used as a pawn or a PR tactic within the Republican Party, I […]

  23. @Jedi Jones – I’m from a small town and would like to know what values you’re speaking of? The ones where people aren’t exposed to others from different countries or ethnicities? The ones where white rules – and everyone else is part of the service staff? The one where a white Walmart manager dropped my money on the floor rather than touch my hand and when he was reported – all I got was amused laughter. What small town values are you speaking of?

foreign policy experience – I have more experience than Sarah Palin. Foreign Policy experience actually requires one to fly outside of your own state/country and mingle with foreigners. I do that all the time. You have to have a track record of being able to talk to and work with people who look different than yourself, speak and act differently than yourself. I do that too. Ms. Palin has no record of experience in this arena. I’ve lived in several European countries – one while I served in the USA military. On a daily basis, I hear five different languages being spoken. (I got out of my small town). Why are you even saying she had foreign policy experience when she doesn’t even have plain ole foreign experience?

and about abortion. If you think abortion is our holocaust -then you haven’t paid attention to American History – at all. I guarantee you that if your daughter or your mother had sex (willingly or unwillingly) with one of those people that work in the servant’s sector – you would be looking for an abortionist. If this wasn’t true, the colors reflected in your small towns, homes, jobs, and churches would look different than what it does now. What you really mean is ..abortion is only OK when it will help you and yours.

And this one.. Oh. Dear. Me. Humans do not cause climate change, God does? I never read that in the Bible. Is that similar to when someone runs over an animal in their car and says, “I didn’t do it, God did it?” What if you’re wrong and God has been trying to tell you this? What if God’s people keep sending you messages but you are ignoring the words of our Lord? What if you can’t get into heaven because God is pissed off that you let so many humans continue global warming – until they all died. I’m just asking….what if?

I get what you’re saying about drilling for oil. It’s similar to when a poor person drives by your house and sees all your riches stacked inside. If the poor person broke into your house and stole everything – and then burned your house down and all the trees and all your pets, we could understand. All I would have to think is, everyone knows we need to drill for oil – in his house.

I know I’m rambling but so were you. Cheers. 🙂

Heeeey Jake. I love your blog.

  24. I think America has become the most stupid country in the world! All these people that think this trash talking moron is so great, and is fit to be vice-president…I’m truly perplexed!
